From our Ohana to Yours

Modern Medicine + Emotional Support = Better Birth Outcomes

Mahina Birth Support was founded in 2017 and has since helped hundreds of families throughout their pregnancy and birth journey. Being from Hawaii, Charity knew that she could not have raised her own children without her Ohana. Ohana means family in the extended sense of the word. It is family by blood, adoption, and intention. You are connected to your Ohana through a sense of love, loyalty, compassion, and support. Her hope with the creation of Mahina Birth Support was to bring a sense of Ohana to Kansas City.

Our professional Birth Doula Support focuses on providing tailored support to help you navigate modern medical care while still honoring your body’s natural ability to give birth. We recognize that collaborative care is truly the best care. Everyone on your birth team has an important role to play and together we can help you achieve a birth where you feel informed, safe, and cared for from beginning to end. If this is what you are looking for regarding Birth Doula Support, we would be honored to take this journey with you!

MAHINA (MAH-HEE-NAH): The Hawaiian word for moon.

Have you ever gone to the beach when the tide is coming in?

When you stand firmly in the shallow water bracing yourself against the incoming waves they often knock you over. You get salt water in your nose and sand in your ears. But, when you go deeper into the ocean, become soft, and dive beneath the surface it is a completely different experience. You will no longer feel the full fury of the waves as they roll over you. When you no longer fight the waves, you become one with them. You breathe and flow together.

The waves do not change, you do.

Contractions are like waves.

Allow your mind and body to shift. In labor, as in the ocean, your strength is in your ability to be soft and flexible. When you take a deep breath, release the tension in your body, and allow your awareness to dive deep below the waves of your contractions they will no longer knock you over. Let them come and go, and remember the waves are not stronger than you, because they are you.

You are the power.

The moon has the ability to create waves in the ocean. Like the moon, your body has the power to make waves as well.

I chose the name Mahina to honor and celebrate your power!
